Meet Julia

B.Phys (Hons), 1st class, University of QLD

Physiotherapist, mother of 4, amateur athlete and ultrarunner.

My interest in health and physiotherapy did not stem from a natural talent on the sporting field through my schooling or adolescence. If anything I was a poor performer athletically.  I was more likely to win the wooden spoon for last place than any trophies on the field. My forte was in the classroom and in the theatre. I enjoyed academia, speech and drama and played the cello. My final years of school had me studying part time at the Conservatorium of Music and completing my performance credentials in drama.

However coming from a medical family the pull of the health industry was strong and I completed my Bachelor or Physiotherapy with first class honours in 2009.   Since then I have worked in the field of rehabilitation, moving quickly into a leadership role at the Brisbane Private Hospital rehab unit and then part time at the Mater Hospital after becoming a mother.

My passion for fitness started in my early 20’s. Like so many women, I was motivated my aesthetics. I grew up in the era of supermodels like Kate Moss. I wanted to be thinner, taller, leaner. I went to the gym, cycled through personal trainers, went through phases of body pump, spin classes, zumba, yoga, pilates. I was relatively fit and maintained a healthy body weight but I never really improved. I also tried ALL the diets - vegan, vegetarian, Keto, paleo, fasting (all kinds), you name it I've tried it. But once again I never really feel like much changed.  I still couldn’t do a single pull up or run more than 5km without feeling stuffed!

And THEN?? I had 4 pregnancies in 5 years. Yep, one after the other. Now things were changing.  At 35 I noticed that staying lean wasn't quite as easy as it used to be, I was TIRED all the time, my stress levels were higher, my solution was running more in the hope that I’d see some positive changes in my lean muscle mass to no avail.

What I really needed was CLARITY. The fitness industry is full of fad diets, workouts and fake news. Empty promises for quick fixes and how to get your pre-baby body back. My priorities had changed. My focus was no longer looking like Kate (which was of course never going to happen).  I wanted to optimise my health and performance. I wanted EVIDENCE BASED, individualised nutrition and health advice so I started doing my own research and finding reliable sources that could help ME. And guess what? The science worked. I am running faster than I ever have, I’m lifting heavier weights, and I’m placing in events against competitors half my age (AND I can finally do 10 pull ups in a row). Using reliable sources of information, my physio background and my passion for overall health and performance, I’m ready to share what I have learnt and help YOU reach your potential.
